After completing this course the student should be able to:

1. Relate energy and other natural resources to economic theory and real economies in diagrams

2. Compare and contrast human-dominated ecosystems with other ecosystems in writing

3. Draw systems diagrams of economies as human-dominated ecosystems

4. Describe the interactions between various natural ecosystems and human-dominated

ecosystems through the economic process in writing

5. Describe and diagram the basic characteristics, and the relations of classical, neoclassical,

ecological and biophysical economics

6. Contrast the strengths and weaknesses of each approach (classical, neoclassical,

ecological, and biophysical) orally and in written form

7. Discuss the evolution of these concepts (classical, neoclassical, ecological, and

biophysical economics) and their relation to energy and material flows

8. Articulate in essays examples about how economic theory has impacted the

environmental and economic development of countries in the tropics

9. Conduct an independent research project that integrates economic and biophysical theory

and data. For example: apply biophysical economics to a development problem of their own interest.
